Tests and exams in German and Italian

Whether telc, fide or CELI in Italian: at ECAP Basel you can take numerous tests and exams and certify your language skills. The certificate will help you find work and is a prerequisite for obtaining a settlement permit or naturalisation.

German examination as a prerequisite for naturalisation and settlement permit

A certificate (telc or fide test) is required for naturalisation or settlement permit. The following German language skills are required:

  • Residence permit: A2 oral, A1 written
  • Preliminary settlement permit: B1 oral, A2 written
  • Naturalisation Basel-Stadt: B1 oral, A2 written
  • Naturalisation Basel-Landschaft: B1 oral and written

Telc examination

ECAP Basel is an accredited telc examination centre. The telc examination is an internationally recognised European language examination system that enables you to prove your knowledge of German. The telc certificates are recognised by companies, authorities and schools and prove that you are learning or have already learned German. At the ECAP in Basel, you can take the telc examinations at levels A1-C1.

Test fide

ECAP Basel is accredited for the fide test and conducts it in the German national language in levels A1 to B1. The fide test was established by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) and is recognised throughout Switzerland. After the fide test, you will receive a language passport that you can use with the authorities, to continue your studies or to look for a job.

CELI certificate for knowledge of the Italian language

CELI certificates (Certificati di conoscenza della lingua italiana, CELI) attest to your knowledge of Italian in levels A1 to C2. You can use the CELI certificate for work and study purposes. To obtain Italian citizenship, you must take the CELI 2 exam.
